Abstract: In this writing, I have tried to sum up some important links and points related to the Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) release.

Microsoft Releases Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Microsoft has released Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 on August 11, 2008. This service pack fixes up bugs and improves performance and stability for issues reported in Visual Studio 2008 since the product was released on November 19, 2007. This release also contains some feature additions to facilitate development. You can download the Service Pack from here. The list of issues fixed in SP1 can be found over here and here. In this writing, I have tried to sum up some important links and points related to the Service Pack 1 (SP1) release.
Points to Note:
·         If you have previously installed a hotfix for SP1 or have installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta (or a prerelease), then you must run the Service Pack Preparation tool before installing Visual Studio 2008 SP1.

·         For Users with Silverlight Tools Beta 2 installed - Silverlight Tools Beta 2 does not support Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta any longer. If you have installed VS 2008 Sp1 Beta, then before installing Visual Studio 2008 SP1, manually uninstall KB949325.

Silverlight Beta 2 now supports Visual Studio 2008 SP1. So if you have Silverlight Tools Beta 2 installed on your machine, after you install VS 2008 SP1, update the Silverlight installer over here. After the SP1 installation, you will find KB955214 installed.

·         Vista Users – If you have Windows Vista and are trying to install VS 2008 SP1, then close the Sidebar before continuing with the installation.

·         If you have both Visual Studio 2008 as well as Visual Studio Express Edition, then first upgrade Visual Studio 2008 with SP1 and then upgrade the Express Edition. You must upgrade all Visual Studio 2008 editions to SP1.

·         MSDN Library for VS 2008 SP1 has to be downloaded separately over here. It contains the SP1 documentation.
Troubleshooting Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 Installation:
If you encounter errors during the installation or there is a product not compatible with Visual Studio 2008 SP1, then uninstall those products and then re-run the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 set up again. The products that are compatible with SP1 as of this writing can be seen over here. Also check the troubleshooting guide over here.
Troubleshooting Visual Studio Express Editions Installation – Check the Read Me over here.
