How to use Personal Web Packages in Microsoft Expression Web

Abstract: A Personal Web Package contains pages, files and folders. In Expression Web, you can export or package a website or a group of files or folders so that someone else can import it and use it in their websites. In this article we will learn more about these web packages, how to create them and use them.
A Personal Web Package contains pages, files and folders. In Expression Web, you can export or package a website or a group of files or folders so that someone else can import it and use it in their websites. Many dynamic web templates (DWTs) available for download on various websites are in the form of Personal Web Package.
Download the Personal Web Package
Download the web package you want to import and save on your computer. The Personal Web Package has an extension of ‘.fwp’. Once you save it, just remember the location where you saved it.
Create a new website
To be able to use the Personal Web Package you downloaded you need to have a website. To create a new website in Expression Web 3, follow these instructions:
a. Go to Site menu > New Site… or key in the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + N.
b. In the New window, choose General in the first column, Empty site in the second column.
c. Enter a location where you want to create this website in the Location box.
d. Give a name to the site.
e. Click Ok.
f. Your new site will be opened in Expression Web.
To create empty website in Expression Web 2 or 1, follow these instructions:
a. Go to File menu > New website > Empty website.
b. Enter a location where you want to create this website in the Location box.
c. Give a name to the site.
d. Click Ok.
e. Your new site will be opened in Expression Web.
Import the Personal Web Package in Expression Web 3
a. With your site open, go to Site menu > Import > Import from Web Package.
b. In the File Open dialog box, browse to the folder where your downloaded Personal Web Package is saved.
c. Select it and click Open.
d. An Import Web Package dialog box will be prompted as below:
NOTE: You can either choose to import the entire web package or only the files. In above dialog box, check the boxes next to the files, if you want to import only few files.
e. A Security warning would be prompted as shown below:
You can click Run if you know the Publisher.
f. When the web package deployment is complete, you would receive the same message. Click Ok in the window.
g. The files will be imported into your site in a folder with the same name as the template name.
Import the Personal Web Package in Expression Web 2 or 1
With your site open, go to File menu > Import > Personal Web Package and follow rest of the steps given above.
How to use the web package?
In order to use the files and folders of the web package you just imported into your site, you need to place all these files and folders into the root directory of the website. So click and drag all the files to the root directory of the site. To drag multiple files, hold down the Shift key, select the files and drag them into the root directory. After moving all your files and folders to the root directory, delete the web package folder.
NOTE: If the language you are using with is other than US English, change the language meta tag of the template files from <meta content="en-us" http-equiv="Content-Language" /> to the language you are using.
Export the Personal Web Package in Expression Web 3
Exporting allows you to create your own web package. Follow these steps to create one:
a. With your site open, go to Site menu > Export Web Package.
b. An Export Web Package dialog box would be prompted as follows:
In this dialog box, do the following:
· Files in site: Choose the files you want to export and click on ‘Add >>’.
· File in package: displays the files you have added to the web package.
· Show Dependencies: will show the dependent files that will be exported along with the files. The following section would be added to the above dialog box, when you click on the Show Dependencies button.
In the Dependency checking box, choose the options you want to check.
· Properties: prompts the Web Package Properties dialog box, where you can add, edit and delete any properties of the web package.
Export the Personal Web Package in Expression Web 2 or 1
With your site open, go to File menu > Export > Personal Web Package and follow rest of the steps given above.
